We Make Our Own Luck
Today is Friday the 13th. Are you superstitious?
I will admit that am a little…
I guess I do believe that luck or the lack thereof does play into certain situations. For example you could end up in the right place at the right time for good or bad things to happen. I don’t want to judge but I’m willing to bet that good and bad things happen to people whether they deserve it or not everyday. This occurs via the free will and choices of others or natural disaster etc.
One summer when I was about 11 years old I was sitting in the sand at the beach just enjoying the sun and gentle waves rolling over my legs when a $10 bill washed right into my hand. That was lucky!
While I do experience a fair amount of serendipity on a regular basis, these days I am trying to make my own luck. Can’t remember who said, “The harder I work, the luckier I get” but I believe it is true. Since I ventured out on my own in 2007 I have realized that no one is going to hand me anything (of value) for free. I guarantee no one is thinking, “I wonder how I can help Bryan advance his career, make more money so he can send his kids to college, pay his mortgage and buy groceries…” ONLY YOU care about YOU as much as YOU. Does that make sense?
It’s a harsh reality but no one (aside from family) cares about you and your projects unless there’s something in it for them. So if you wait around for that $10 bill to wash into your hands you might be waiting a while. Get out there. Make stuff. Do stuff. Make it happen!
What say you?

I couldn’t agree more, Bryan. If we wait for luck to deliver the goods, we’ll be waiting a long, long time.
